The Future is Beginning

Federico Giudiceandrea, CEO of Microtec, recently presented his company's latest development at ‘ScanTech’, in Melbourne and New Zealand.

The presentation details the developments and the results of X ray scanning of logs and integrating this with Microtec’s MaxiCut cut pattern software and GoldenEye Grade Scanning optimisation, the result, log breakdown by VALUE recovery, or, in a peeler log application, virtually unwrap the veneer and grade it prior to it going to the lathe!

Truly the future is beginning......

Carter Holt Harvey Installs 'GoldenEye' at its Lakeside Plant

August 2010

We are greatly honoured to have been selected by Carter Holt Harvey, the largest player in the softwood market in Australasia, for their first non-contact Grade Scanning System.

Acora Reneco and Microtec have now installed the complete system at CHH’s Lakeside Drymill and performance testing will begin shortly.

The System comprises multi sensor scanners including X ray, Laser Scattering, Line Laser and Colour Camera to give unequalled vision of the board’s characteristics at up to 4,000 scans per second. Boards will be coded and tracked through Microtec’s proprietary vibration analysis system that measures the board’s natural frequency without microphones, to determine MOE. However, until AS 1748 grading rules are approved, the system will take the E value from the existing Metriguard and combine this with the vision systems for grading without operators.

The system runs at up to 700 metres per minute (or 120 pieces per minute) and offers CHH’s customers the highest consistency and accuracy in grade sorting available anywhere in the world. Microtec have supplied the scanners and controls and Acora Reneco the handling systems, installation and project management.

The CHH decision followed its viewing of similar systems in Europe and the GoldenEye installation at AKD’s Colac plant.

AKD have subsequently purchased and installed a second system including a dual chop saw line complete with sorting control via Microtec’s VarioSort system. This AKD line also includes the revolutionary M3Scan moisture system, which accurately detects moisture content independent of board density.

Automatic Treatment Line Commissioned

Acora Reneco has recently completed the successful commissioning of a new generation high speed stacker and in feed system to support a new automatic treatment Line at Highland Pine Products (HPP) in Oberon, New South Wales.

The equipment means that HPP can treat their dried timber on line and on demand, and is a fully-flexible system that allows for ‘on-the-run’ selection of packs for treatment.

The process allows the dry sorter operator to select a pack for treatment and the whole pack is then diverted to the treatment line, singulated, even ended and then fed piece by piece at up to 100 pieces per minute through the transverse spray unit.

The spray booth will apply Osmose DeterMITE, termite protection coating onto all timber passing through this line. The advantages of this system are that individual pieces are sprayed while they are carried through the spray booth on sharp top chains, so that all parts of the piece are treated.

The total system comprises a bundle transfer trolley, surge decks, unscrambler, Tong Dog lug loader, spray booth system, course divider, stacker and automatic lathe placer. We are particularly proud of our new generation Stacker which has a simple function making it not only capable of high speed but also relatively maintenance free.

Finished treated packs are then fed into the existing strapping line and taken to storage ready for despatch to the client. The system is fully automated and allows for constant system checks of treatment take-up.

  • Sowing the seeds for climate change benefits
The NZ Government should underwrite the growing of millions of forestry seedlings if it wants to meet its climate change planting goal. Current planting levels are far below the 30,000ha of new forest a year for 10 years needed to meet the country’s greenhouse gas emissions target. Four thousand hectares were planted last year and just 2000ha the year before.
  • Seeking expressions of interest for harvesting and haulage services in the Green Triangle region
In order to develop the necessary harvesting and haulage capacity, ABP is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) for the provision of harvesting and transport services.
  • Number of dwelling units approved rose 2.3% in July 2010
ABS Building Approvals show that the total number of dwellings approved rose in July 2010 following falls in the previous three months in seasonally adjusted terms.
  • Future domestic plantation and native forest supplies will struggle to meet demand
Australia’s National Plantation Strategy Coordinator David Thompson recently made presentations to the WA Minister for Forestry, Terry Redman, the WA Forest Products Commission and industry representatives regarding future wood supplies and plantation investment mechanisms. In part, this was in response to commentary that Australia is facing a ‘wood glut’ under current forestry MIS arrangements, and that there is no need to expand the plantation estate.
  • Free forestry conference puts GIS on the map
A national and international line up of geographical information systems (GIS) experts will be punching Rotorua’s coordinates into their sat-navs in October, as they converge on the city for a unique forestry event.
